To all you people in the linux community out there… some musings.

I’m sure you’ve heard talk somewhere about the need to unify/simplify/etc. GNU/*nix. To some extent, I agree. But alas…

I hear talk of the need for one WM, instead of the ‘battle’ between Gnome, KDE, Xfce, etc. I disagree here. GNU/Linux is about freedom [among other things], and having a de facto WM, while it may simplify things for beginners, would not appeal to me. I realize that a standard WM wouldn’t mean I couldn’t use others, but I fear it may be kind of like how MSWindows is the norm for computing, applications tend to be written for it, without regard to alternatives.

Also, the more we “simplify” things in Linux, the harder we make it for those who don’t necessarily want it to be simple. I point out Ubuntu as an example, sometimes I get frustrated because it tries to simplify things [often by gui'fying them]. Sometimes I’d rather handle things myself thank you.

Of course, then I plug something into my computer and get mad because it doesn’t work right away, so maybe I have no room to talk.
